SHOW NOTES
FROM THE PASTOR’S INBOX
Why don’t we do verse-by-verse preaching only?
Derek addresses why Grace Church chooses to balance verse-by-verse and topical preaching:
- Preaching is central to the Christian method, but the Bible doesn’t prescribe a single method—both verse-by-verse and topical approaches are biblically sound.
- Topical preaching allows the church to address current issues and topics like emotions, relationships, and faith in practical ways, grounded in biblical principles.
- Derek emphasizes that sermons aren’t just for information but for transformation, encouraging application of the Bible’s teachings.
- The greatest sermon, the Sermon on the Mount, shows Jesus addressing a wide array of life topics rather than focusing on a single book or passage.
REINVENTING CHURCH TOPIC
Pursuing Discipleship in Different Sized Churches
Derek and Dan Nichols discuss how discipleship can look different depending on the size and context of a church:
- Dan’s Background: Pastor at Grace Christian Fellowship in NY and founder of Northeast Collaborative, Dan has experience in church planting, leadership coaching, and pastoring an established church.
- What is Discipleship? Defined as becoming more like Jesus and helping others do the same, discipleship involves prioritizing Jesus in every aspect of life.
- Discipleship in Different Contexts: Dan shares how discipleship approaches vary between small churches, church plants, and large churches, but the core relational aspect remains constant.
- Biblical Foundations for Discipleship: Discipleship is rooted in the Great Commission (Matthew 28), the Great Commandment (Mark 12), and the Great Collaboration (John 17).
